Charlie Sheen and Art—a 'Winning' Combo?

Burbank art gallery showcases pop culture with a special exhibit and opening reception.

It had to happen. "Winning," an art exhibit inspired by Charlie Sheen, is running April 1 to 15 at the Hyaena Gallery in Burbank with a special reception on April 2 that is free and open to the public.

"The 'Winning' exhibit came about as an excuse to have some fun with current pop culture," said gallery owner and curator Bill Shafer. "So many of the artists I know were joking about doing art based on Sheen, and I was personally fascinated by the situation he was creating. One night I was talking with Jeff Rebner [an artist in the show] about how intrigued I was with Sheen, and he talked me into doing the exhibit."

Shafer quickly rearranged the gallery's show schedule to coincide with the opening of Sheen's live Torpedoes of Truth shows to add to the current  entertainment value.

This exhibit at Hyaena Gallery gathers a select group of artists from its roster, including Jim Wirt (author of "Coloring Book Land"), Jeff Rebner  ("American Dad"), Ken Stranahan (award-winning VFX artist), Chris Mann, Big Tasty, Lou Rusconi, Donnie Green, Jessica Ward and Nicolas Caesar.

Hyaena Gallery, which marks its five-year anniversary Friday, opens new exhibits twice a month. The gallery hosts live drawing events, book signings and other events. The gallery's niche is fine art outside the norm, specializing in dark and edgy work, including lowbrow and outsider art.
