Sports Roundup: Crespi Back on Track

Crespi triumphs, and Westmark wins its first league game.

Crespi (5-1) defeated Taft 56-7 in an intersectional matchup Thursday night.

Junior quarterback Cody Cordell connected on three first half touchdown passes. Cordell finished 8-of-11 for 155 yards.

Chris Harper caught two of the touchdown passes, including a 40-yard grab and Mike Davison caught a 28-yard touchdown. Davison added a 55-yard punt return for a touchdown in the second half.

Sophomore Brad Kaaya made an impressive second half performance matching Cordell with three touchdown passes of his own on 112 yards passing.

Brandon Arnold intercepted a pass and returned it 92 yards for a touchdown, his second interception return of 90 yards or more in three weeks.

The Celts will now prepare for Serra League play against rival Notre Dame next Friday night. The game will be televised on Time Warner Cable.

The Junior Varsity defeated Taft 28-19.

The Lions Show Off Their Mighty Roar

Westmark High (4-1, 1-0) beat Concordia 42-26 on Thursday in its first Omega League game of the year.                                                         

Junior Michael DeBie led the way for the Lions with 239 yards rushing on 22 carries and four touchdowns.

Sophomore Adam Rosenberg added 80 yards on 11 carries and two touchdowns.

Fifth Annual Weisenburger Invitational, Oct. 1

The Birmingham girls won the team competition in the 2.8-mile course at Elysian Park. Dominique Dowell led the Patriots finishing eighth in 18:52.

Carly Alanis (ninth with 18:53), Kimberly Nava (11th with 18:59), Berenice Vidana (15th with 19:11) and Stacy Macias (18th with 19:32) also contributed to the team victory in a field of 80 girls.

The Birmingham boys placed second in the team competition led by freshman Ryan Alexander, who finished in seventh with a time of 15:05.

Erik Sandoval (13th with 15:39), Jarrick Wenslow (14th with 15:41), Luis Solano (20th with 16:05 and Emanuel Arevalo (27th with 16:21) made great performances against the field of 109 varsity runners.

Birmingham Boys and Girls Win West Valley Dual-Meet at Pierce College, Oct. 6

Birmingham freshman Ryan Alexander won the race at Pierce College’s 2.9 mile course in 16:09 in a West Valley League dual-meet against Chatsworth and Cleveland.

The Birmingham girls had four runners finish in the top five of the race including Stacy Macias, who finished in second with a time of 19:44 to defeat West Valley League rivals Chatsworth and Cleveland.

Staub Barnes Invitational in Crescenta Valley, Oct. 1

Freshmen

Evan Anozie won the freshman race in 18:51.31, Brandon Clause finished third in 20:13.31, Nick Vernoy finished sixth with 21:14.66 and Will Cosentino came in seventh with 21:38.31. The Celts came in first as a team in the Division 3 freshman team competition.

Sophomores

Max Portillo finished in fifth with a time of 18:59.93.

Junior Varsity

Noah Miller (14th with 20:20.00) led the junior varsity to a fifth place team finish.

Where Are They Now?

The Reno Bighorns of the NBA D-League hired former Crespi All-American center Paul Mokeski for their head coaching position.

The NBA D-League is the developmental league designed to replicate the minor leagues in baseball. The Reno Bighorns are affiliated with the Atlanta, Memphis and Sacramento NBA franchises.

Mokeski played 12 years in the NBA for Detroit, Golden State, Houston and Milwaukee.
