UPDATE: What Would You Like to See Replacing Rite Aid?
In your dream Encino, what would be at the corner of Ventura and Haskell?
UPDATE February 22: The votes are in! I'd like to thank so many of you for your emails and comments about what you would like to see taking the place of the old Rite Aid at 15630 Ventura at Haskell.
Many Encino Patch readers wrote that they wished for the return of Barnes & Noble, ideally as a two-story store (the current building is a single floor).
A couple of you wished that Island's restaurant would return to the neighborhood (Patch reported on the closure of its Encino location last November).
Other suggestions included a Trader Joes or a Whole Foods, a coffee shop, a Stone Fire Grill, a crafting studio and a children's indoor play area. For a complete list of suggestions, read the comments below, and feel free to add your own!
Encino Patch will keep in touch with the Chamber of Commerce regarding any possible proposed developments, so bookmark this page to check back for details as they become available.
***
The old Rite Aid at 15630 Ventura Boulevard and Haskell closed its doors last year. According to the Encino Chamber of Commerce, there are no immediate proposals in the works by businesses looking to occupy the space.
What would you like to see open in the new location. Another pharmacy? A restaurant? A clothing store? Dare we say it, the return of Barnes and Noble?
Let Encino Patch know by sharing your plans with us about what you would love to see on that corner. Leave a comment in the box below!

Of course I would love to see a return of Barnes and Noble to Encino. I would also love to have a closer Trader Joe's, which I have been wanting for YEARS! I also wouldn't mind a return of Island's Restaurant....

---my FIRST choice would be OF COURSE!!!!!!!.... "BARNES & NOBLE". we NEED a bookstore in Encino! ASAP!!
---we DO need a closer "TRADER JOE'S"!! or... a "FRESH AND EASY".
--we have ENOUGH of coffee places, restaurants, pharmacies and drugstores! no need for more! unless just ONE thats missing. ARGENTINEAN FOOD.
---a "WHOLE FOODS" in Encino!! the Rite Aid place is not big enough....but we DESPERATELY NEED a WHOLE FOODS!! the ex Barnes & Noble where is now CVS, would have been THE perfect location for a WHOLE FOODS.
---another choice is a "REAL HEALTH FOOD STORE", not a Vitamin Shoppe kinda, but a REAL NATURAL one, w/ GOOD NATURAL PRODUCTS, HERBS & LOOSE TEAS. a kind of "FOLLOW YOUR HEART" in Canoga Park.
---a "HANDMADE GALLERIES" kinda place but MUCH BETTER, w/ handmade artistic gifts from different artists. would be very fun & enjoyable!! things for men, women, kids, pets, home & garden, w/ a coffee nook inside & artistic pastries, chillout music. murals inside. in fact! WHO WANTS TO DO IT W/ ME!??!?!
---a "CRAFTING STUDIO". w/ all the equipment that a crafter/artist needs (not for kids, but for ADULTS), where u can go and rent the machines/space by the hr, the day. where u can meet different crafters, enjoy each others talent, mingle, maybe even become friends. that'd be great for the community. places like that unites us all. w/ great music, a coffee nook to socialize, know people that likes the same things u do.

-- a 100% ORGANIC PRODUCE AND FOOD SMALL MARKET. maybe combined with loose organic teas and herbs and NATURAL supplements. with bulk loose grains, coffees, etc. all 100% ORGANIC and GOOD PRICES. who would buy anywhere else?!?!?
-- a book/coffee cool place/lounge that stays open till 3-4 am (or 24hs) to chill and hang out and know COOL people and go thru books or read, etc. decorated as if it was a living room. with a few handmade artistic items for sale, and cool chillout music as a background. and maybe art and photography on the walls, that is also for sale. we dont have a cool place in encino. encino is TOO BORING. it need to "hip up"!!!

As Encino goes lately the 'odds' Chase Bank 5-2, Real Estate office 2-1, FedEx 4-1, The "new" Coffee Joint 13-1 Persian NIght Club 20-1, ChicFilet 50-1. What we realy need is a GOOD Mexican restaurant......Taco Bell! ?> but it would do well there!!

A Stonefire Grill...

They're not putting in a bookstore, unfortunataly they aren't profitable I guess. There's also a large empty space where Borders was on Victory/Canoga. Trader Joes would be a great idea, but we do need some decent family restaurants. Islands IS sorely missed, but apparently they didn't get enough business ...
We don't need anymore coffee places, yogurt shops, banks, CVS/drugstores (they ruined the Barnes & Noble location), or car dealerships... Look what they did to the old Chevy's location. A good Mexican restaurant would be great, but I'm voting for a Stonefire Grill... It would be nice if the boulevard had a welcoming walking environment like State Street in Santa Barbara...

@ "J"-- the ex Borders, is NOT empty. whens the last time u passed by there? i saw a TJ-Max sign coming soon. i dont know why we need another one!! they just opened one by the whole foods in tarzana.... besides that space is TOO BIG for a Trader Joes, AND it would be even further than the one we already have now in encino...
i agree w/ u that they ruined the area with the CVS. it looks CHEAP and commercial. i live right on Hayvenhurst. and OH PLEASE!! a Mercedes Benz expansion?!??! FOR WHAT? was that really needed in the area!?!?! i much rather have Chevy's or sth else. not a CAR DEALER!! the Stonefire Grill pizza is really bad. we dont need another mediocre pizza place.
and the idea of "family restaurants"...., if that means rude kids running around in a restaurant and people behaving as if they were in their living rooms and being loud, i'd rather have something else and not promote that kind of behavior as if it was "OK"!! enough of impolite people in public!! people today have no manners and are very inconsiderate with the one next to them.
and i agree w/ u also about the State St in Santa Barbara feel. that would be AWESOMEEE, but it will never happen here. beginning with the fact that people in Santa Barbara are different. they are polite and respectful. its another vibe....UNFORTUNATELY. plus, Sta Barbara is a cozier smaller place. this Ventura Ave is huge.

@ Erin Cohen. i think this is a great idea!! where kids can lean manners from a professional, cause certainly their not getting the lessons from their parents. kids today are IMPOSSIBLE compared to 30-40 yrs ago. and i realize that parents have no clue on how to raise them.

An upscale casual restaurant with take out food, like Jones on Third, Urth Caffe or Huckleberry would be welcome. The space is too small for a Barnes and Noble, perhaps a boutique bookstore, but that type of business profile just doesn't work anymore. Please, we don't need another Mediterranean restaurant, or mediocre chain restaurant in Encino...like Islands or Olive Garden.

i LOVE the idea of a TWO STORY Barnes & Noble!!! big companies like that can tear the place down and do a 2 story for sure!! i hope the city permits that.... a TWO STORY Trader Joe's would be AWESOME too!! the 2 story thing i think is a great idea!!

First part of my reply:
Many of you probably remember when this location was a "Thrifty Jr." store, one of the few small format mini-moo-sized Thrifty locations that had a very edited assortment of merchandise as compared to a traditional-sized Thrifty store.
Then Rite Aid came along, and all of a sudden, the Thrifty Jr. location was comparable to many Rite Aid locations back east in terms of square footage.
For whatever reason, the store failed (or the lease was not renewed), I'd have to research that.
As far as what would work best, Fresh & Easy could open one of their brand new "Express' stores...think Thrifty Jr.
Fresh & Easy Express is an edited selection of items found at a regular-sized Fresh & Easy location. Similar to 7-Eleven in size, but slightly larger, and a better, healthier, less expensive alternative than a 7-Eleven type store.
On the other hand, Family Dollar and Dollar General are on a tear to open as many new locations in southern California as possible, and the former Thrifty Jr./Rite Aid box would be just the right size for Family Dollar and/or Dollar General.

Second part of my reply:
This is not to say that a "dollar" type store would not work in the location, either of those chains could probably make the location work, however those two retailers formats (Family Dollar and Dollar General) do not fit with Encino's overall demographics.
Community members should be on the look out for recently filed "stealth" or "anonymous" applications filed on behalf of these (or any) retailers. Unfortunately, “stealth” filing happens frequently, and often times, by the point when the community finds out, it's often too late to file any objections or protests.
So, stay keyed into which/what type of business is eventually going to fill the former Thrifty Jr./Rite Aid location. Check-in from time to time with the city of Los Angeles for any permit applications by the company(s) themselves, or their contracted leasing/real estate representatives who may use "assumed" or dba names that have no correlation to the business that wishes to occupy the space.

2 story Barnes & Noble is a great idea. Other than that, I would love to see Islands return, or something like it. As far as Whole Foods, that's unlikely, given that there's one in Tarzana now (a really nice one) and one in Sherman Oaks.

@ Leslie Cole : when u say that a WHOLE FOODS is unlikely cause theres one in Tarzana and one in Sherman Oaks, think that there was also one in WOODLAND HILLS (a pretty big one) and they put the one in TARZANA anyway. they are LITERALLY 5 minutes by car from each other. every neighbourhood should have ONE. i have to go from here in Encino 22 BLOCKS to the one in Tarzana. that with traffic is HELL.... just to go "to the market"?!?!? 22 BLOCKS!?!?!... and the gas at almost $5?!?!? the one in Sherman Oaks to me doesnt even count cause its so small that they dont carry half of the items i usually buy...
a 2 story "WHOLE FOODS"
or a 2 story "TRADER JOE'S"
or a 2 story "BARNES & NOBLE"
......would be SO AWESOMEEEEEE.........
