Encino to Throw Community Party at Park

Billed as an old-fashioned evening out with family and friends, the Saturday event includes a showing of 'Shrek,' information on local resources and a chance to meet community leaders.

In a time when local gathering places—such as the now shuttered Barnes & Noble store—are becoming scarcer, Encino community leaders are working to keep their neighborhood a place where everyone knows each other’s names.

“Welcome Back,” a free outdoor gathering and old-fashioned evening out with family and friends, is planned for 5-9:30 p.m. Sept. 10 at Encino Park (also called Genesta Park), at 16953 Ventura Blvd., between Genesta and Paso Robles avenues. The event coincides with the end of the first week of school.

There are lots of activities planned for the event: the movie Shrek, to be shown at dusk on a large blow-up screen; face painting and balloon artists for the children, food trucks and information to be given out about resources available to Encino residents.

The evening is presented in conjunction with the Encino Community Center’s nonprofit organization Friends of Encino Park and other area community organizations, said Jeff Ebenstein, field deputy for Los Angeles City Councilman Paul Kortez, who is scheduled to attend.

“The councilman [Koretz] wants to have more community events and cohesive time to get together,” Ebenstein said. "It’s an opportunity for neighbors to get together in time for 'back to school' and meet the councilman and his staff.”
