How to Install a Child Safety Seat and Avoid the Most Common Mistakes

California Highway Patrol Officer Heather Hoglund demonstrates how to lock the seat belt, tighten the harness and determine proper seat position for the child's size.

The Los Angeles Police Department partnered with the Encino Community Center Saturday to provide free child safety seat inspections.

"Nationwide, there's probably an 85 to 90 percent failure rate in terms of installation [of car seats]," said California Highway Patrol Officer Heather Hoglund, who was providing instruction to local residents.

The most common errors found during an inspection are incorrect installation of the car seat, loose-fitting harnesses and improper for the child’s size.

“I came out today because I have a brand new granddaughter who is not even three-weeks-old and I want to be able to take her places and do things with her," said Encino resident and Recreation Facility Director Lee Marks. "It’s very helpful because they show you how to change that car seat, when to do it, when to go to that next level."

Hoglund showed Encino Patch how to install a child safety seat properly and avoid the common mistakes. If you couldn't reserve an appointment at the inspection on Saturday, watch the informational video above.
