Los Encinos State Historic Park Annual Easter Egg Hunt a Hopping Success ‎

The Easter Bunny hides more than 2,000 eggs for area children.

The Easter Bunny made his rounds on Easter weekend, including a hop and stop at Los Encinos State Historic Park on Saturday for the annual Easter egg hunt. It’s a multi-decade tradition at the five-acre park, stretching back to at least the late 70s.

The Los Encino Docents Association raises money throughout the year from donations to purchase more than 2,000 plastic eggs filled with candy and small toys, said Jennifer Dandurand, the park interpretive specialist.

“We usually get 200-300 kids along with their parents,” Dandurand said. “It’s become a real tradition over the years, and it’s just a nice thing to do for the community.”

It’s their most popular event of the year, she added.

In addition to the egg hunts, the merriment included traditional games, a stone blacksmith shop that featured a metalworking demonstration, old time music, and performers in period costumes. The De la Osa Adobe museum was also open for self-guided tours during the free event.

Encino resident Natasha Belson brought her three children, Levi, 6, Layla, 3, and 10-month-old Zane for the first time to the egg hunt, although she said they come often to feed the ducks at the park on the weekend.

“We live in the neighborhood and we were just looking for some fun outdoor activities for our children,” Belson said. “We love this park."

Natalie and Dennis Peterson said they attended the event last year with their kids, Liam, almost 2-years-old, and CJ, who will soon turn six.

“We just wanted something exciting to do with the kids and celebrate Easter and springtime,” Natalie explained.

Los Encinos State Historic Park includes the original nine-room De la Ossa Adobe, the two-story limestone Garnier building, a blacksmith shop, a natural spring, and a duck pond.
