Was That a Jerry Over Eagle Rock Skies?

Vintage warplanes, including some with German Luftwaffe markings, fly over the community.

Vintage World War II warplanes flew in formation over Eagle Rock as part Memorial Day on Monday— a rare sight that included bombers with German Luftwaffe markings. The planes flew several sorties over the Eagle Rock area throughout Monday morning, providing residents with a glimpse of history in the skies.

I was working on my car in the garage and instantly knew from the sound that they were vintage WWII planes of some kind, and figured they were part of some Pasadena parade. I finally caught a few glimpses of them after hearing the buzz throughout the day. At first one formation. Then another. Then towards the end of their flight, I witness three formations flying in sequence, about 12 planes in total, and my heart lifted. What I felt was probably a fraction of what people must have felt to see young pilots go off to serve back then. Although I am only 28, I was reminded of my friends and family who have served and are serving in the military. Thanks for the surprise reminder! Very cool.

In my humble opinion, the planes of the first flight seem to be either T-6 trainers, or Dauntless or Avenger Torpedo Bombers - and the "Jerry" Iron Cross markings probably were out on it for training purposes (There are very few German WWII planes that look like that). If anybody knows more, I would very much like to be corrected.

Great seeing those AT-6's still flying! Proud warbirds that trained pilots during WW2.

They are parked on the west side of Van Nuys airport, if you are in the area.
