Grab & Go Kids Calendar: Family Field Trips Around L.A.

Mind-expanding experiences, and a sweet celebration of candy, offer something for every age.

This week there are some very special events happening right outside the San Fernando Valley that are fun and fascinating for all ages. 

Maira Kalman: Various Illuminations (of a Crazy World)

Where/When: Skirball Cultural Center, 2701 N. Sepulveda Blvd., Los Angeles; exhibit runs until Feb. 13.

Why Go: This is the first major museum exhibition of this celebrated illustrator, designer and author, who has drawn many iconic works for The New Yorker, illustrated over a dozen books, created a popular illustrated blog for The New York Times online ("And the Pursuit of Happiness"), and collaborated with leading designers like Isaac Mizrahi. Kalman's whimsical work is sure to bring smiles for all ages!

 Pricing: Exhibit is included with museum admission: $10 general; $7 seniors and full-time students; $5 children 2-12; FREE to members and children under 2; FREE to all on Thursdays.

World City at the Music Center Featuring Hot 8 Brass Band

Where/When: Walt Disney Concert Hall, W.M. Keck Foundation Children's Amphitheatre, 111 S. Grand Ave., Los Angeles; Saturday at 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

Why Go: New Orleans' Hot 8 Brass Band is widely known for its funky and energetic take on New Orleans street music.  Simply, it's great music that makes you move, kids will love it—and it's FREE!

Pricing: All tickets are FREE and  distributed on Grand Avenue at 2nd Street. Tickets for 11 a.m. performance distributed beginning at 10 a.m. Tickets for 12:30 p.m. performance distributed beginning at 11 a.m.

A CRAFTlab Workshop: Soft & Sweet Fabric Hearts

Where/When: The Craft and Folk Art Museum, 5814 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles; Saturday, 1:30-3:30 p.m.

Why Go:  It's a crafts workshop that's fun for the whole family and just in time for Valentine's Day! Kids can create a soft fabric heart with silk, cotton, felt or cotton to give to someone special.

Pricing: $8 per child; museum members FREE

Target Free Family Saturday: Candyland

Where/When: Japanese American National Museum, 369 E. First St., Los Angeles; Saturday, 11 a.m-4 p.m.

Why Go: A free day of candy fun. Celebrate food and all things candy with fun treats for the entire family. Enjoy a candy buffet by Sweet Lips Design, embellish and fill a box with your own candy-inspired decorations, make a wearable treat by constructing a candy lei, learn how to fold an origami candy dish, watch how to make mochi ,and lots more!

Family Time! Songs and Stories From 2011 Grammy Children's Music Nominees

Where/When: The Mint, 6010 W. Pico Blvd., Los Angeles; Saturday, 10:30 a.m (doors open at 10 a.m.)

Why Go: Your entire family will love it, and The Mint is cool. Rock, bop and sing along with amazing music from Grammy nominees, including Justin Roberts, Will Harley, The Battersby Duo, Steve Pullara with Oran Etkin and Judy Pancost. All proceeds benefit the Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation.

Pricing: $12.50 advance tix/$15 day of show; non-walking babies age 1 and under are free.
