Mural Makeover: Which Do You Prefer?

From Hawk to Tony Hawk--which Highland Park mural do you prefer?

It's common knowledge among muralists that their works are inherently impermanent.

One day, your shining spray-paint creation is the talk of the city's public parking lots and the next it's been obscured by opportunistic taggers.

Such has always been the case for graffiti artists who have plied their trade in the LADOT parking lot between Avenues 57 and 58 behind North Figueroa Street. One low-standing wall in the southwestern corner of the lot, in particular, has experienced numerous facelifts in the last year.

For several months, a depiction a determined looking hawk with his wing raised in defiance dominated the wall. Over the course of the last couple of days, though, the hawk was replaced by a mural that pays tribute to the "Los Angeles Skate Mob Culture."

The words "El Pueblo Llamado" are written on the left-hand side of the mural, and "Viva Mexico" on the right-hand side.

In between, skateboarders can be seen kick-flipping atop pyramids and volcanoes.

Now that the hawk has been replaced, we ask, which do you prefer? And, what is your favorite mural in all of Highland Park-Mount Washington?

The bird is better. The other looks gangster and negitative. It looks like garfetti.

I like the skate mural. Skaters are part of the city, their culture should be celebrated too. These kids are helping reduce pollution by not driving as much, and fighting against obesity, even if that's not their intention. Skating should be encouraged more :)

You can not tell those guys are skateboarding. If they could make it clear that would be fine. And, the writing on it has to go.

CBF - I totally agree! I love Rivera, Siquieros, and Orozco type murals!
