Weekend Planner: L.A.'s Largest Earth Day Festival Is This Weekend

Drop into CHAMPSFest for live band performances, an Earth Day celebration at Lake Balboa or the Valley Art Club's spring show.

When/Where: Sunday, 10:30 a.m. to  7 p.m., Woodley Park, 6350 Woodley Ave., Lake Balboa.

Why Go: There will be live music and entertainment, inspiring speakers, numerous nonprofits, kids' activities, a food court, a beer and wine garden, a dog park and much more.

When/Where: May 23, 29, 30 and June 5, 6, 12, 13 at 10:30 a.m., Two Roads Theatre, 4348 Tujunga Ave., Studio City

Why Go: Moms, dads and grandparents are bringing their little ones to Tujunga Village to see Epoxie (Phil Briggs) do his tricks in The Magical and Joyful Spectacle of Epoxie”: juggling, balancing, plate spinning, magic and storytelling. The one-man, 50-minute clown show is aimed at preschoolers to early-elementary-age kids). The show's focus is about gently sharing new experiences with children and giving them a calm first experience with theater.

28th ANNUAL STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL

When/Where: Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. to  6:30 p.m., Strawberry Meadows of College Park, 3250 S. Rose Ave., Oxnard.

Why Go: It's worth the drive for this once-a-year event featuring live entertainment, more than 200 booths of arts and crafts, a huge assortment of delicious strawberry foods and beverages, demonstrations and presentations, plus Strawberryland for Kids with free rides, puppet shows and more.

Pricing: General admission, $12; seniors (62+), $8; active military and their dependents with ID, $8 (only available at entrance gate); children ages 5-12, $5; free for kids 4 and younger. Only cash at gate, or order by credit card online.

2nd ANNUAL CHAMPSFEST

When/Where: Saturday, noon to midnight, CHAMPS Charter High School of the Arts, 6952 Van Nuys Blvd., Van Nuys.

Why Go: It's the school's own Coachella, with 12 hours of music hosted by the school’s Internet radio station AER (Arts Entertainment Radio). The daylong festival on the school’s Van Nuys campus will feature performances on two stages by 16 of SoCal’s best up-and-coming bands, six DJs, 25 solo musical performances, seven food trucks and other food vendors, a video game room, a skateboard area, a jewelry store, a mehndi and face painting area, and more!

Pricing: $10 online, $15 at the door.

SAN FERNANDO VALLEY ART CLUB SPRING SHOW

When/Where:  Saturday, 5-8 p.m., Gallery 800 at the Lankershim Arts Center, 5108 Lankershim Blvd., North Hollywood. Show runs through June 11.

Why Go: The San Fernando Valley Art Club is launching its 2011 Spring Show featuring the latest work from their members, who are among the best fine artists in the 818.
