Fromin's Deli Will Soon Be Uncle Bernie's Deli

The new owner of the Encino landmark wants to restore the deli's standing in the community.

Fromin's Deli located at 17615 Ventura Blvd. in Encino has a new owner, Norman Green.  The restaurant has been transitioning over the last 30 days but will soon launch a new menu and name, "Uncle Bernie's Deli."

"I named the deli after my Uncle Bernie, who lives in Beverly Hills," Green said in an interview with Encino Patch. "[He] is a great business man and wonderful person."

The 49-year-old deli known for its overstuffed pastrami sandwiches and éclairs, has changed hands three times since it opened in 1962.

“It was a huge family place where grandparents and grandkids and the parents of the kids all came in together traditionally eating Jewish dishes and following the Fromin family that owned this place for so long,” said Hal Bresin, a waiter at Fromin’s for 31 years. “And when they left it all changed. So I think that [the new owners] will help bring it back.”

“My goal is to make a difference, make everybody happy, bring it back to what it used to be,” Green said.

If you're uncle was a great businessman he would have told you not to change the name. Fromin's has been around for almost 50 years and the first thing you want to do is change the name?! Let me guess, you were the guy behind the New Coke and you're back from Siberia? What's your next conquest, buying up control of Apple and renaming the iPod (or iAnything) to iGreen and iBernie? Thanks for the laugh. Don't get me wrong Green, you own it and can do whatever you want. It doesn't make you the sharpest tool in the shed though.

Your executive chef Justin is amazing. He greeted us after we were seated and gave us some samples of his cornbeef and pastrami. It was delicious. He was so friendly and proud of his menu. I have great vibes for this resturant.

Lunched at Uncle Bernie's today and it was delicious. The pastrami was the best I've ever had, tender with no fat. The service could not have been better. Everyone was very nice and it just felt good walking in there. We will be looking forward to going back. JK

How about writing a restaurant review? Why all the vitriol? The food is great. The service is terrific. The atmosphere is warm, friendly and inviting. You sound like a guy with permanent heartburn. Thanks for the laugh.

I agree that it's a shame about the name change. There are not a whole lot of restaurants that have been around as long as Fromin's and it would have been a respectful honor to the family that were able to keep this place around as long as it has, a nod to its past and the long-standing tradition. We always like it at Fromin's and will be back soon for weekend breakfast with the kids.

What a joke. It's a disrepect to the Fromins family to change it's name to that joker of your Uncle. Why destroy the tradition. That's soo greedy andf selfish of you guys to do this. Mr. Green you and your family are full of full of **** bunch of phony's. Just leave it alone. This does not make you the king. Go back to where you came from. Money is all you care about not the people or community. Get a life.

I think the name is great! And, with food like this they can call it anything they want. How many restaurants do you know that have an age 55 senior menu? Or, weekday early bird menus that offer fabulous food at very reasonable prices. This place is quality and quantity. The staff is well treated and exceedingly attentive to patrons. This place deserves our business. It is one restaurant that treats the workers very well and does not try to squeeze every penny out of us during this bad economy. I just discovered Uncle Bernie's, but will definitely be a regular. I only eat out, so having a good place with a reasonable, diverse menu is very important to me.

Terrible service!! Waitress should not be working on a busy day!! I have never seen anyone make so many mistakes!! Meals served more than 15 minutes apart!! No apologies made....no compensations made! Ridiculous! I will never go here again and I will never recommend this place to anyone!
