Trim Calories With The Plate Method

"Boot Camp Dietitian" Jessica Martin discusses what should be on your plate that provides nutritional value and trims calories.

Have you given any thought to what you put on your plate? This week we met up with Jessica Martin, "The Boot Camp Dietitian," to learn a few tips on healthy eating.

In the accompanying video Martin, a clinical dietitian and certified fitness instructor, discusses "the plate method" at Balboa Sports Complex where she regularly meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the early morning to train members of her new boot camp.

The plate method consists of a plate half full of fruits and vegetables, a fourth of the plate consisting of a meat source and the remaining fourth the carb source. Martin states it is a great way to get in the necessary food groups and trim calories off one's plate.

Martin recommends opting for carbs with fiber whenever possible, which are healthier and more filling.

According to Martin, one-third of the population is overweight and 30 percent is obese. For these reasons she believes portion control is of the utmost importance.
