Welcome to "5 Things You Need to Know Today," a new Patch column where we give you essential information at a glance. Check back each day for more, and let us know what you think of this new feature in the comments.
- The Encino Chamber of Commerce is having their monthly Disaster Prep Committee Meeting today from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.
- October is Hispanic Heritage Month and our local Barnes and Noble is celebrating with a bilingual story time, featuring stories in both English and Spanish. This event will also include special arts and crafts at 5 p.m. For more information, visit our calendar.
- Speaking of Barnes and Noble, more than 1,800 people have gathered on Facebook to mobilize support for the bookstore. They just announced that there will be a protest on Oct. 17 at 10 a.m. Details to follow.
- We have a bit of a roach issue in our sewers. Rest assured, the city will be taking care of it in November. Along Ventura Boulevard, between Lindley Avenue and Sepulveda Boulevard, 150 to 200 holes are scheduled for pesticide treatment.
- Today is a "Give 5" day at Patch and Local Editor Lauren Rosenblum helped parent volunteers with drop off and pick up at Hesby Oaks Elementary School, while sporting a very stylish neon vest. As part of company philosophy, Patch employees are asked to give five days a year to volunteer in the communities they serve. Patch also donates five percent of its advertising space to local charities from the communities it serves.
