5 Things You Should Know: June 12

Good morning, readers. Welcome to the “5 Things You Should Know Today” — a listing of headlines, public meetings and announcements you need to know to kick start your day.

Today is Tuesday, July 12 and here is what’s happening in and around Encino:

1. The Encino Tarzana library will be open from 12:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. today.

2. Can’t Stop the Music will be playing at Skirball Cultural Center at 1:30 p.m. today. According to the center’s website, the 1980 film is loosely based on the story of the iconic 1970s band The Village People. It follows the adventures of a musical group and their rise to fame, featuring Bruce Jenner and Steve Guttenberg.

3. Los Angeles fire officials are warning Angelenos of the importance of pool safety on their blog. So far this year, the Los Angeles Fire Department has responded to 26 near-drowning calls. In a single weekend during the summer of 2010, there were 10 drowning and near drowning incidents in the City of Los Angeles, that resulted in the deaths of one man and two children, according to MySafe: L.A. 4. The local air quality reading is moderate, according to the South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD). This means the air quality for our community today is acceptable; however, some people who are unusually sensitive to ozone may experience respiratory symptoms, according to AQMD.

5. If you need to fill up your tank today, you’re better off driving to Tarzana or Van Nuys, where stations such as ARCO at 6039 Reseda Blvd. are selling regular fuel for $3.61 per gallon. The cheapest gas we could find in Encino was $3.71 per gallon at both of our ARCO stations.
