A Carmageddon Commute: LAX to the Valley

Chicago resident Taylor Hampshire reports her drive from LAX to the Valley as she bypasses the 405 closure to make it to her grandma's house. She arrives in record time.

My friend Taylor Hampshire and her mother, Karen, booked their trip from Chicago to Los Angeles long before the 405 closure made national headlines.

Like the rest of us, they didn't know what to expect when public safety and transportation officials warned Angelenos to stay indoors this weekend or get out of town.

We all feared Carmageddon: A traffic doomsday, the granddaddy of all traffic jams.

On Saturday afternoon, however, Carmageddon was far from apocalyptic.

Hampshire's entire trip from LAX to Encino via surface streets took only 40 minutes.
