Is the Lost and Found Rembrandt Drawing a Fake?

The authenticity of the stolen Rembrandt discovered in an Encino church is in question, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Investigators are still trying to determine whether the drawing that was stolen from the Ritz-Carlton hotel in Marina del Rey last week and recovered from is an authentic Rembrandt.

The roughly 10-inch by 6-inch drawing known as "The Judgement" was dated circa 1655 and reportedly worth $250,000. It was positively identified last Tuesday by its owner, the Linearis Institute, and remained in sheriff's custody as the investigation continued.

The Times reports it is unclear what documentation the Linearis Institute used to establish its origin.

The Times also reached out to some art experts who questioned whether it was drawn by Dutch master Rembrandt van Rijn.

Dr. Martin Royalton-Kisch, retired curator of Dutch drawings at the British Museum, said in an emailed response that based on the style of the drawing, “It’s clearly [in my personal opinion] a work of Rembrandt’s school rather than by Rembrandt himself.”
