Looming Hillside Mansions Still Being Built

The city put a stop to the 'mansionization' craze that was sweeping across Los Angeles. But some projects got in under the wire.

Residents of Sherman Oaks Avenue are unhappy over the huge, 9,000 square-foot home being built on their street. However, the project was approved before the Los Angeles City Council adopted new rules for building single-family homes in hillside neighborhoods.

In an effort to stem the tide of "mansionization" of Los Angeles hillsides, the City Council unanimously approved the in March to prevent what the new law calls "out-of-scale" structures that detract from the natural look of the many hills and canyons in city territory, including Encino.

Residents are concerned that these mansions can affect a neighborhood's aesthetic as a whole and permanently diminish property values.

The poster house that triggered de-mansionization is a 10,000 square-foot home with 10 bedrooms and nine bathrooms on Hayvenhurst Avenue in Encino. The mansion still hasn’t sold after four years on the market.

The rest of the story is in this accompanying video from Sherman Oaks Patch Editor Doug Kriegel.
