Are You Ready for the Great California ShakeOut?
This statewide drill Thursday at 10:21 a.m. will help residents and first responders practice for a major earthquake.
Forty-five seconds.
That's all it took to shake the homes and lives of people living in the West Valley in 1994, the year of the 6.7 magnitude Northridge earthquake. Although 16 years have passed, the memories of that event are still fresh in the minds of Encino residents.
On Thursday at 10:21 a.m., the region will experience another quake, but this time it will be in a simulated fashion. That's when the 2010 Great California ShakeOut will occur.

Created to help people and organizations be better prepared for major earthquakes, the ShakeOut gives first responders an opportunity to practice their emergency plans. It also provides residents a chance to practice the "drop, cover and hold on" drill.
Here in Encino, schools such as St. Cyril of Jerusalem, Westmark and Los Encinos have registered to participate in the event. The Encino Chamber of Commerce and the community center will do so as well.
