Today Is the Deadline to File Your Tax Return

You need to have your payment mailed in today to be considered on time, even if you have filed an extension or plan to file one.

Today, April 18, is the date your income-tax return has to be submitted electronically or postmarked to be considered on time by the IRS.

If you need more time to prepare your federal tax return, you can file for an extension. However, extensions are only for filing the paperwork, not the tax payments you owe. You still need to have your payment postmarked by April 18 in order to be considered on time even if you have filed an extension or plan to file one.

It is important to send at least an estimated payment before the deadline, even if you haven't calculated exactly how much you owe. According to , if you don't file and don't pay, the IRS can charge 5 percent of what you owe each month as a penalty, up to 25 percent.
