Trutanich Seeks to Stop New Encino Pot Shop

The city attorney continues his fight against medical marijuana dispensaries.

Los Angeles City Attorney Carmen Trutanich is seeking a court injunction to prevent a medical marijuana dispensary from opening in an Encino strip mall, his office said Friday, according to City News Service.

Frank Mateljan, a spokesman for the city attorney's office, told Patch that the proposed location for the pot shop is in a shopping center at 15826 Ventura Blvd. The center, said Mateljan, is close to and . Both of these locations, he said, have schools on the premises.

"It's against the zoning code," said Mateljan. "It's illegal in a shopping center."

The center is currently home to stores that include and spa.

Those hoping to lease the store space for the marijuana dispensary had previously owned another pot shop in Encino called the Coffee Joint that "had been cited and shut down," according to Mateljan.

"The LAPD conducted an undercover operation, and narcotics were sold to those officers," Mateljan said.
