Veterans Day Observances Planned Throughout Los Angeles, Including the Valley

Among the events will be the eighth annual San Fernando Valley Veterans Day Parade in Pacoima,

Veterans Day observances are planned throughout Los Angeles County today amid calls from President Barack Obama and Gov. Jerry Brown to provide veterans with benefits.

Thousands of spectators are expected to line the 1.1-mile route of the eighth annual San Fernando Valley Veterans Day Parade in Pacoima, which is set to begin at 11:11 a.m. in a nod to World War I ending on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918.

The parade will begin at the corner of Laurel Canyon and San Fernando Mission boulevards and end at Ritchie Valens Park at Laurel Canyon and Paxton Street.

Forest Lawn Memorial Park-Hollywood Hills' 52nd annual Veterans Day program will begin at 11 a.m. It will include  an aerial performance by the Golden Stars Skydiving Team, patriotic music played by the Notre Dame High School marching band and Los Angeles County Supervisor Mike Antonovich reading a presidential proclamation. Observances are also planned for Commerce and West Hollywood.

In his Veterans Day proclamation Obama wrote "as our troops in Iraq complete their mission, we will honor them and all who serve by working tirelessly to give them the care, the benefits and the opportunities they have earned.''

Brown shared similar sentiments in his Veterans Day message, saying "on this Veterans Day, let's remember the sacrifice, but let us also rededicate ourselves to making sure our veterans have the education, the health and the jobs that they– like other Americans–richly deserve.''
