Weekend Planner: Celebrate Spring With Outdoor Activities

Culture and history mix with science and the arts for a fun weekend.

When/Where: Saturday, 1-4 p.m. Leonis Adobe Museum, 23537 Calabasas Rd., Calabasas.

Why Go: It's fun for all ages at an historic site. See baby farm animals up close; participate in an egg hunt at 2 p.m., as well as other crafts and games.Watch tortilla making, blacksmith demonstrations, wool spinning and weaving; plus live music by Craig Newton.

Pricing: Members, free; adult non-members, $4; child non-members, $2.

Downtown Burbank ARTS Festival

When/Where: Saturday 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. San Fernando Boulevard between Magnolia Boulevard and Olive Avenue in Burbank.

Why Go: The four-block show features more than 100 outstanding artists, as well as  the next generation of talent from Burbank schools. Included will be paintings, sculpture, ceramics, jewelry, fiber art, fine glass, woodwork, mixed-media and photography. Live entertainment, street painting, art demonstrations (including an 8-foot sandcastle) and free workshops will add to the fun.

Pricing: Admission is free; food and other purchases cost extra.

Santa Monica Mountains Science Festival

When/Where: Friday and Saturday, Paramount Ranch, 2813 Cornell Rd., Agoura Hills.

Why Go: Discover the mysteries of nature in this national park site. For inquiring minds of all ages. Watch owls fly at night. Identify a wildflower. Learn how to track mountain lions and bobcats.

Pricing: Free with $7 parking.

Chumash Day Powwow and Inter Tribal Gathering

When/Where: Saturday, 11 a.m. to 7 :30 p.m.; Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Malibu Bluffs Park, 24250 Pacific Coast Highway.

Why Go: It's fun, different and cultural. Taste native food, see Native American arts and crafts, music, dancing and entertainment, children’s activities, storytelling and more.

Pricing: Free admission.

Spring Break Campfire Night

When/Where: Tuesday, 7 p.m. King Gillette Ranch, 26800 Mulholland Hwy., Calabasas.    

Why Go: Bring family and friends and be ready for songs, marshmallows and an interpretive program by park naturalists. Dress warmly and wear sturdy shoes as there is a short uphill trail walk to the campfire amphitheater. The program will be about 1 1/2 hours long.

Pricing: Free program, parking inside the park is $7.

Complex Comedy 5th Anniversary Show 

Where/When: Open Stage West, 14336 Ventura Blvd., Sherman Oaks; Saturday, April 16, 8 p.m.

Why Go: Join this professional improv comedy troupe as they celebrate five years together. Plus, those two magic words: Open bar.

Pricing: $15-$20

China Philharmonic Orchestra 

Where/When: Valley Performing Arts Center, 18111 Nordhoff St., Northridge; Saturday, April 16, 8 p.m.

Why Go: See classics such as Berlioz's Roman Carnival Overture and Puccini's Preludio Simfonico live on a lovely Saturday evening.

Pricing:  $15-$55

Earth Day Bike Ride and Celebration 

Where/When: Starts at Wells Fargo Bank, 10225 Riverside Dr., Toluca Lake; Sunday, April 17, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Why Go: Celebrate Earth Day with a 7.5 mile bike ride, farmers' market, "Taste of Toluca Lake" and more. Remember to wear green!

Brunch Cooking Class 

Where/When: Cook L.A., 10938 Ventura Blvd., Studio City; Sunday, April 17, 11;30 a.m. - 2 p.m.

Why Go: What better way to spend a Sunday afternoon than learning to make tasty plates like frittatas, summer pilaf and sweet bread? (Yes, you get to eat it, too.)
