What's Labor Day Without Jerry Lewis?

Comedians plan Monday Web-athon to raise funds for Muscular Dystrophy Association.

The 46th annual Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) Labor Day telethon went on Sunday night without Jerry Lewis as host.

Comedians are upset, and that's no laughing matter. So a gaggle of famous names have gotten together to hold an online on Monday from Hollywood's Laugh Factory. All the proceeds are going to Lewis' favorite Muscular Dystrophy charity as the "Jerry Lewis Award."

Lewis, who had hosted the nearly 'round-the-clock fundraiser since 1966, and had been the face of the Muscular Dystrophy Association with his "Jerry's Kids" fund drive, was unceremoniously sacked by the organization earlier this year as the show was chopped to 6½ hours. It was seen locally on KCAL-9. Over the years, Lewis has raised $2.5 billion in a search for a cure. Neither the MDA nor Lewis have commented directly on his firing.

But, when asked at the recent Television Critics Association press tour in Beverly Hills what he would have to do to be satisfied with his life, Lewis replied to popgoestheweek.com: “Get the cure for muscular dystrophy, then I’m fine.”
