Sara Erstad-Landis put a leash on her miniature pinscher-Chihuahua mix and opened the door.
But before she could react, little Phoenix dashed outside and into the street where a hit-and-run driver killed him.
Phoenix was a service dog who would aid Erstad-Landis who has cerebral palsy and a seizure disorder.
"The house feels empty, actually. I'm so used to having tippy-toe feet around, and it feels empty without him," she told KABC7.
And now she needs a replacement, but that could take months.
