Steve Tyrell Sings at El Caballero; Debbie Reynolds Among Guests

Some 500 members and guests attend the event at the golf course Friday night.

El Caballero Country Club's ninth fairway was transformed into an outdoor concert venue Friday night featuring Grammy Award-winning vocalist Steve Tyrell. The event brought members and guests together for an evening of music, dining and dance.

“We hope to raise the bar by doing an event like this every year,” said Artie Berrick, chairman of the social committee at El Caballero in Tarzana. “We’ll have big-name acts, and Concert on the Green will be synonymous with a great night of food and top-notch entertainment.”

Around 500 members and guests—including show business legend Debbie Reynolds—attended the event, which featured an all-you-can-eat buffet and tables arranged around the outdoor stage. While distant lightning occasionally lit up the sky behind the stage during Tyrell’s performance, the weather stayed beautiful at El Cab and the only electricity in the air was caused by the excitement of those enjoying the concert.

“It’s impossible to escape the beauty of the atmosphere—there’s such a positive vibe,” said Bracha Krueger, who attended the event. “I can’t think of a better way to spend my Friday evening.”

Known for bringing the standards from the Great American Songbook to life, Tyrell opened the concert with “Don’t Get Around Much” then went on to other pop standards like “Crush on You” and “The Way You Look Tonight.”

“I’m going to play some songs from my new album, I’ll Take Romance, which will be out on Valentine’s Day, plus I’m going to play all of the evergreens that I’ve been playing the last 12 years,” Tyrell said before the concert. “I’ve moved a little more recently into the rhythm and blues area of the Great American Songbook—songs of Etta James, Ray Charles, Sam Cooke—so I’ll be playing some of those types of songs.”

People got up from their tables and swayed to the music, obviously enjoying Tyrell’s performance.

“It’s been an overwhelming success. People are so excited tonight—I’ve never quite experienced the vibe going on like this before at any event we’ve had,” Berrick said. “People walked in and saw the trees lit up, the place lit up, and when everyone started to see where their tables are and saw the stage, they just said, ‘Wow.’ ”
