Local Girl Organizing Temple Judea Concert to Help Breast Cancer Charity

Skylar Steinman, who lives in Encino, and her friends will be singing for a good cause June 2.

A 12-year-old Encino girl who attends in Tarzana is preparing for her October Bat Mitzvah with an impressive project: a 'Glee'-style concert at the temple to raise funds and awareness for the Avon Foundation, a breast cancer charity. Skylar Steinman will be taking to the stage with her friends on June 2.

Her mother, Sheryl Steinman, told Encino-Tarzana Patch that her daughter, who attends in Sherman Oaks, has been interested in singing and performing from a very early age.

"Skylar loves singing," said Steinman, "and more than a year ago she said to me 'I want to sing for my Mitzvah project."

The two discussed the project and came up with the idea of putting on a concert, even though they realized that an enormous amount of planning and rehearsing would be involved, said Steinman.

She said that her daughter had always been interested in helping childrens' charities, and initially decided to have the money go toward one. But when her aunt got diagnosed with Stage-2 breast cancer in January, Skylar decided that she wanted to help her aunt by having the funds go to a breast cancer charity.

"'Mom, I would love to do something for breast cancer,'" Steinman remembers her daughter telling her.

Sheryl Steinman said that, as she is already part of an Avon breast cancer charity walking team called "Peace Love Cure" (the group raised $50,000 last year) the mother-daughter duo decided to support Avon with their concert.

"I'm really proud of my daughter," said Steinman, "that she came to me and said 'Mom, this is what I want to do.'"

Concert tickets will be available online shortly at Temple Judea's website, as well as at the door, for a donation of $18. Check back with Encino-Tarzana Patch for the exact link on Temple Judea's site as it becomes available.
