School has been underway for the last one or two weeks and it is time to be pro-active for this new year of learning.
View this year as a new opportunity. Any school issues or other problems from last year? Encourage your child to see this as a chance to start anew. Think of the good things that happened in school last year—new friends, trips, special activities. An optimistic outlook can go a long way.
Don’t wait for the problems. Academic problems last year didn’t just go away. Weak skills ( unless your child spent time with us or other solid educators) are still weak The minute you see class work or homework affecting your child’s pleasant smile—investigate. Don’t wait for report card time when your child may have fallen too far behind to catch up. Speak to the teacher right away if you have concerns-a good teacher needs your feedback to help your child move forward.
Establish open communication. Good communication and parental involvement are vital. Make it your priority—it’s not complicated. Talk with your child about school. Stay in touch with his or her teacher. Keep apprised of what your student is learning and do your part to make homework and studying a priority.
Get organized. Set up a homework area. Help your child organize his papers and keep track of his assignments. Help him or her make a schedule for homework. Be well organized yourself so you can make sure the schedule works.
