UPDATE: 2 Seriously Hurt After Car Crashes Into Tree

High speed collision on Burbank Boulevard near Balboa in Encino sends three to hospital.

Three juveniles were injured, two seriously, Monday afternoon when a car veered off Burbank Boulevard and smashed into a tree, according to Matt Spence of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The crash happened at about 4:30 p.m. at 16900 W. Burbank Blvd. in Encino.

According to the Los Angeles Police Department's Valley Traffic Division, the male driver was taken to UCLA Medical Center and may have suffered severe injuries to his back.

Officer Erik Obrecht said one of the passenger's had minor injuries and the other suffered severe, life-altering injuries. The male and female passengers were taken to two separate hospitals.

"It should have been a fatality, in my opinion, at the speed they were going," Obrecht said. "Witnesses said they were going 80-100 mph."

"When you're driving west on Burbank approaching Balboa there’s a bend. And when people are hauling ass, they go up on the sidewalk and hit the tree," he said.

Obrecht said two men were killed last year on the same tree.

The investigation is still ongoing and will be assigned to a detective. The wreckage of the 2008 Audi A4 was removed from the scene.
