Update: Valerio Street Barricade Ends in Arrest

The suspect, who was believed to be armed, was in his apartment in the 15600 block of Valerio Street while police fired eight rounds of tear gas into his unit.

 A Van Nuys man who was allegedly armed with a gun barricaded himself inside an apartment building in Van Nuys for about five hours on Tuesday.

The suspect was in his apartment in the 15600 block of Valerio Street while police fired eight rounds of tear gas into his unit, police said.

The man, whose name has not been released, surrendered and was taken into custody around 3 p.m. He was booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon.

LAPD spokesperson Richard French said a maintenance worker called the West Valley station around 10:25 a.m. and reported there was a man with a gun. The workers at the building saw the suspect was holding a gun and "threatening to shoot everyone and everything around him," French said. The workers left the area and called police.

The Los Angeles Police Department West Valley Area set up a police perimeter in the area of Haskell Avenue between Sherman Way and Saticoy Street. They asked local residents to avoid the area for two hours and stay indoors.

"[Police] are trying to contact him and get him to calm down and get out of there," French said at 1 p.m. "We don’t really know what his problem is."
