Police were searching Thursday for a gunman who shot and critically wounded a man near the Balboa Sports Complex in Encino.

The shooting took place near the intersection of Balboa and Burbank boulevards, close to the Balboa Sports Complex in the 17000 block of Burbank Boulevard, about 11:20 p.m. Wednesday, said Officer Gary Shanahan of the Los Angeles Police Department's West Valley Station.

"Our officers responded to the intersection of Balboa and Burbank where they found one man, about 25 years old, who was shot once in the upper torso," Shanahan said. "The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment of his gunshot wound," he said. "He was listed in stable but critical condition."
