Woman Is Detained in Connection to Shooting Threat at Valley College

Someone called the community college, saying someone was going to "shoot it up," prompting sheriff's deputies to clear the campus.

A former student at Los Angeles Valley College was detained at her Panorama City home today in connection with a threat that there would be a shooting on the campus, but she was not arrested, authorities said.

Someone called the community college about 9 a.m. and said someone was going to "shoot it up,'' prompting sheriff's deputies to clear the campus at Burbank Boulevard and Fulton Avenue, Deputy Guillermina Saldana of the Sheriff's Headquarters Bureau said.

Nearby Grant High School was placed on lockdown as a precaution.

The sheriff's department had reported that about 10:40 a.m., a 21-year-old woman was detained, but late this afternoon the department issued an update, saying that a 19-year-old woman was detained but not arrested and that the threat investigation was continuing.

The lockdown at the high school was lifted after the woman was taken into custody, according to the sheriff's department.

Classes and other activities at the college were canceled until 5 p.m., at which time the campus reopened for final exams, according to a campus operator. All campus activities were expected to resume on Friday, according to the college website.

The incident was handled by deputies with the sheriff's Community College Bureau, which patrols the nine campuses of the Los Angeles Community College District.
