Garcetti, Greuel Support Tunneling Through Sepulveda Pass

Both mayoral candidates have different opinions on what type of transit should go through the corridor in the next 30 or more years.

Both candidates to be the next mayor of Los Angeles agree the now-behind schedule I-405 Sepulveda Pass Improvements Project won't truly resolve the congestion issues with that freeway system and agreed the long-term mega tunnel idea to travel through the Santa Monica Mountains is feasible, according to LAStreetsblog during a press conference in Sherman Oaks in early May.

City Councilman Eric Garcetti and City Controller Wendy Greuel advocated for a real transit solution to driving on the 405 through the Sepulveda Pass to meet the US-101 Freeway in San Fernando Valley.

Metro is looking roughly 30 years ahead to anticipate the day when demand exceeds capacity on the freeway and another transit corridor—the Sepulveda Pass Transit Corridor—will be needed to travel to and from the Westside and the San Fernando Valley.

The ideas floated for the transit corridor include a bus lane, light rail and even a mega tunnel through the Santa Monica Mountains with the possibility of toll lanes.

The plan that moves forward may depend on the approach selected by a Sepulveda Pass Transit Corridor's public-private partnership.

Garcetti said he'd invest heavily in rail and even a subway through the mountains, while Greuel suggested bus rapit transit, bike lanes, light rail and dedicated lanes.
