Balboa Bridge Fire

Balboa Bridge fire at LA River

I was walking beneath the Balboa Blvd. over the Los Angeles River this morning and discovered that a fire had occurred in the past few days. I wanted to make sure that this story had not been filed and was unable to find a prior post. The evidence is a bunch of burned tree trunks on the north/west side of the river - bridge complex. The accumulation of flood debris has been a problem since May of 2010.

I spoke to a captain at Station 83 who informed me that indeed a fire did occurred 3days ago. The captain indicated that this is a fairly routing occurrence due the accumulation of organic flood debris and presence of homeless individuals camped in the area. "It was probably the result of an improperly discarded cigarette" he said.

On the south side of the river, immediately below the bridge is evidence of illegal exploded fireworks and a receipt from BevMo which might mean there was illegal consumption of alcohol although I did not see any discarded bottles or cans. I first saw these items on July 5th and believe they are unrelated to the more recent fire.

Pictures of the spent fireworks as well as the BevMo receipt are below. All of the pictures were taken this morning except for the last two photos which were taken back in January of this year.

QUESTION: Is this incident enough to motivate the Friends of Los Angeles River to take action to remove dangerous flood debris from beneath the Balboa Blvd bridge? Moreover, is it worth a once per night drive by of park personnel to monitor what is going on beneath the bridge? I appreciate your comments.
