Crespi Kids Sign Football Scholarships

Receiver Devin Lucien is going to UCLA, defensive lineman Reggie Coates is going to Nevada, and safety Charles Washington and defensive lineman Ronald Ussery are going to Fresno State.

Today was National Signing Day for high school football recruits, and the Crespi Celts celebrated in style at Soup's Sports Grill in Woodland Hills as four graduating seniors inked scholarships with major universities. Receiver Devin Lucien signed with UCLA after narrowing his choices to five schools as a crowded room awaited the prized recruit’s announcement.

Defensive back Charles Washington and Ronald Ussery are going to Fresno State, and Reggie Coates signed with Nevada.

Lucien sat at a table with five hats in front of him–those of UCLA, Cal, Colorado, Miami and Arizona State. At first, he put on the Miami hat–he just took an official visit there last weekend–but he was just bluffing before putting the Miami hat down and putting on the UCLA cap, as his parents sat next to him beaming.

“It’s been kind of crazy. I had more than 20 offers, and I think going to UCLA is the best decision for me and my family,” Lucien said. “I have to say, this is truly a blessing and an honor.”

At one point, Lucien broke down with tears streaming down his face.

“Oh wow, I don’t like to cry in front of people,” he said with a smile.

Washington and Ussery are best friends who plan to room together at Fresno State.

“I feel good about my decision. The coaches are great at Fresno State,” Washington said. “I’ve been looking forward to this day for a long time.”

Ussery was wondering how well they’ll adjust to dorm living.

“We’re good friends, but sometimes Charles doesn’t clean up–and he says he doesn’t do dishes,” Ussery said. “I’m ready. I’m excited.”
