Stenhouse Breaks School Record With 424 Yards Passing in Crespi Football Win

The senior completes 35 of 45 passes as the Celts defeat visiting Clovis West 34-33

What do you get when two high school football powerhouses with totally different styles go head to head? An instant classic.

In a Friday night thriller, pass-crazy Crespi defeated smash-mouth Clovis West of Fresno, 34-33, as Kenny Stenhouse threw for a school-record 424 yards and three touchdowns, finishing 35 for 45 to set a Crespi single-game record for completions, too. He also ran for a touchdown.

Crespi overcame some shaky special teams play early on, as they drew a penalty for too many men on the field on their initial punt return, suffered a missed 38-yard field goal attempt and executed a poor punt. But Stenhouse was up for the challenge, connecting with Devin Lucien nine times for 159 yards and two touchdowns of 40 and 43 yards. The second touchdown grab by Lucien included a leap over two Clovis West defensive backs in the end zone.

"We executed a little better tonight and we played with very good discipline," Stenhouse said. "The offensive line really stepped up and did a great job. This feels great."

Lucien was well-covered on both touchdowns, but Stenhouse delivered the ball perfectly.

"My brothers and I played as a family," Lucien said. "We stuck together and stayed focused the whole time and then Kenny was just great tonight. He stepped up and made plays when we really needed them to be made."

In their first trip to the San Fernando Valley in the rich history of Clovis West football, running back Kendall Brock, an University of Nevada commit, rushed for 196 yards and a touchdown on 24 carries, including a 24-yard run.  To add to these gaudy numbers, he chipped in three receptions for 40 yards.

"This is a heartbreaker to come all the way down here and lose by one point like this," Brock said. "I had an off night, too. I've been tearing up the area up where we're from this season and tonight Crespi's defense brought me back down to Earth."

Clovis West's Ian Hall was 8 for 20 for 108 yards and threw two interceptions, one of which was returned by Charles Washington for a 25-yard touchdown.

Even without their top offensive lineman, injured Jordan Simmons, Crespi seemed focused on attacking Clovis through the air via Stenhouse, Lucien and fellow receivers Chris Harper (17-yard TD reception) and Michael Davison.

Tied at 21 at halftime after a very physical first half, Clovis West suffered two botched snaps on point-after attempts in the second half, the last of which turned out to be the deciding point.
