Nearly 500 people gathered for the annual Relay For Life walkathon.

The 11th annual Relay For Life of San Fernando Valley walkathon kicked off Saturday morning at Birmingham Community Charter High School in Van Nuys.

Nearly 500 participants, including cancer survivors, their family and friends, came together to show their shared commitment to fight against cancer.

Participants walked around the school track for about 24 hours, ending on Sunday morning, to raise money.

Through the event, volunteers gather together once a year to celebrate life and remember those they lost their battle against cancer. They raise money for cancer education and research to find the cure for the disease.

The American Cancer Society sponsors Relay for Life walkathons across the country year-round. For more information on how to participate in the fight against cancer, go to relayforlife.org.
