Jan Freed is an Eagle Rock resident and retired schoolteacher who taught physical and environmental science for more than 20 years in two local public high schools—Abraham Lincoln High School, on Broadway, and at the former Silver Lake branch of the City of Angels, an option school. As a teacher, Freed has seen the proverbial “writing on the wall” that points directly to human-made climate change and its potentially devastating consequences. He believes that the human race now way beyond the environmental writing-on-the-wall stage. Which is why he recently installed 18 solar panels on the roof of his house—and he encourages everybody with a south-facing roof to do the same.
